PROPERTIES OF SOIL

WATER CONTENT (W)

It is a ratio of weight of water to the weight of solids.
water content is always greater than and equal to zero.

DEGREE OF SATURATION(S)

It is a ratio of volume of water to the volume of voids.
0<S<100%

VOID RATIO(e)

It is a ratio of volume of voids to the volume of solids.
e>0

POROSITY(n)

It is a ratio of volume of voids to the total volume of soils.
0<n<100%

AIR CONTENT

It is a ratio of volume of air to the volume of voids.

PERCENTAGE AIR VOIDS

It is a ratio of volume of air to the total volume of soil.

CALCULATE SOIL PROPERTIES

Esplain the terms of residual soils and transported soils. 4s For a saturated soil, moisture content is 40% and specific gravity is 271 Determine saturated unit weight and dry unit weight. For a soil in natural state, given e-08, w-24%, and GS-268. (a) Determine the moist unit weight, dry unit weight, and degree of saturation tb) If the soil is completely saturated by adding water, what would its moisture content be at that time? Also find the saturated unit weight.

CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF SOIL NEEDED FROM THE BORROW PIT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENT

3- An embankment with following sketch and length of 800 m is supposed to be constructed along with a river. The embankment shall be roller-compacted to reach a void ratio of 0.7. The void ratio of borrow (river site) is known to be 1.0. Determine the requirered volume of cut (excavation from river site) in this project. Work neat and explain all assumptions and steps. 3 m 2 m 12 m
